National Tennis Rating Program (NTRP)
Classifying Players by Skill Level
Tennis is a more enjoyable experience when players of similar playing ability are matched against one another, especially on the singles court. An objective system is needed to define a players' ability level. These concerns were addressed in the 70's and 80's around the tennis world. The United States Tennis Association also recognized this problem developed and adopted the National Tennis Rating Program (NTRP). This is the system we use when organizing skill level events in Bangkok.
Tennis Rating System is Flexible and Accurate
The NTRP tennis guidelines describe the characteristics and abilities of thirteen skill levels using a numerical scale. This tennis rating system allows players to rate themselves and choose the most accurate classification. These ratings are not intended to be a permanent marker for players. Through match play experience and technical development a player can improve their abilities and reach a higher level of skill. The NTRP tennis ratings are more specific and objective than the traditional letter designations A, B, and C. This results in a more accurate player classification.
Within each numeric level the guidelines describe the strokes and skills necessary for the player to be classified at a particular level. Example: 3.0 level players tend to have a forehand that is “fairly consistent with some directional intent” but “lacks control.” At the 4.5 level a player’s forehand will have “very good consistency” and that player will consistently use "speed and spin effectively.”
NTRP System Allows Self-Rating
Both current and potential players can read through these guidelines to gain a better understanding of the system and rate their own levels. Keep in mind that the ultimate accuracy of these ratings occurs in 'match play'. Tennis has a history of sportsmanship and fair play. Get started today...!
